A Variety of Opportunities for Our Students

At Saint Gabriel School, while we thrive on our academic excellence, we also want to nurture our students mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. That is why we have extra curricular opportunities for our students to engage in throughout their time with us.

Student Council

The Student Council at Saint Gabriel School consists of a group of our middle school students. They come together weekly and/or monthly to collaborate on ideas and events that can directly benefit Saint Gabriel School and the community. These events can include school dances, an Easter egg hunt, spirit weeks, and Saint Nicholas Day. All members of Student Council must maintain grades of a C- or above and adhere to the school’s policies and procedures for behavior. This club is overseen by the Principal and a student or parent volunteer.

Art Club

Art club will be held after school until 3:45 PM. Art club is available to students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. The art club runs in three-week sessions throughout the school year. Students work on various projects such as paper making, scrapbooking, holiday crafts, foam art, tie-dye t-shirts, mosaics, stained glass, mural painting, and more. To provide the best experience for all students, elementary students are assisted in the club by an eighth-grader. This is a fun and creative program intended to advance the crafting skills of our young artists.

Band

Instrumental music instruction at St. Gabriel School is provided through CT Future Musicians, which has provided successful music education programs for private and parochial schools since 1975. Lessons are offered to students in Grade 4 through Grade 8 on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. As students progress on their instruments, additional instruments may be chosen.

Once a week, students receive a half-hour lesson in a small group. Students are grouped by ability, and as progress is made, lesson groups are altered. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis during the day to avoid interference with the same subject matter each week. During the first year, students are part of the Cadet Band, which rehearses during recess. Upon completing one year of study, most students are promoted to Advanced Band.

Advanced Band is comprised of students in their second through fifth year of playing, and it meets for 45 minutes immediately following school dismissal. Advanced Band students are eligible to play in SGS Jazz Band by invitation or audition. The St. Gabriel Advanced and Cadet bands perform for school functions. This includes events such as Grandparent's Day, the Christmas concert, and the spring concert.

Once students complete Book I, they are invited to audition for the CFM Eastern Regional Band. This higher-level band has full instrumentation and meets during October with a culminating concert. Participants of the three CFM regional bands audition in January for placement into one of the three CFM all-state bands. Students are placed according to their audition results into the All-State Concert, Symphonic, and/or Jazz Band. These three bands hold a culminating concert at Central CT State University.

Additionally, these bands travel to New York City, NY and perform at the Lincoln Center and also perform outside at the Old State House in Hartford, CT. As many as two-thirds of the St. Gabriel Advanced Band participate in the all-state program each year.
