Saint Gabriel School Assessment Program

At Saint Gabriel School, we utilize a combination of assessments to monitor student growth, inform instruction, and ensure each child is progressing academically. Through both individualized and standardized assessments, we gain valuable insights that allow us to tailor our instruction to meet students' needs and support their continued success.

DRA3 – Developmental Reading Assessment

The Developmental Reading Assessment, Third Edition (DRA3) is an individually administered reading assessment used to evaluate students’ reading fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. This tool helps teachers determine students’ independent reading levels and identify areas where additional support or enrichment may be needed.

At Saint Gabriel School, all students in Grades K-3 are assessed with the DRA3 at the beginning of the school year to establish a baseline reading level. Teachers may then administer additional assessments at the end of each trimester to monitor progress and ensure consistent reading growth throughout the year. The DRA3 provides essential data that informs small group instruction, guided reading strategies, and individualized student support.

By integrating the DRA3 into our literacy instruction, we ensure that students receive personalized attention that fosters strong reading skills and develops a lifelong love of reading.

NWEA – Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) Growth Assessment

The NWEA MAP Growth Assessment is a web-based, adaptive assessment used to measure student progress in reading and math. This nationally recognized assessment allows teachers to track student learning in real-time and adjust instruction to better support individual growth.

At Saint Gabriel School, students in Grades 2-8 take the NWEA MAP Growth Assessment three times a year:
📌 Fall (September) – Establishes a baseline score for each student.
📌 Winter (January) – Measures mid-year growth and helps teachers adjust instruction.
📌 Spring (May) – Evaluates end-of-year progress and prepares students for the next academic level.

Because MAP Growth is adaptive, it adjusts in difficulty based on student responses, ensuring an accurate reflection of their knowledge and skills. Teachers use the results to:
✅ Identify strengths and areas for improvement at both the individual and class level.
✅ Differentiate instruction based on student needs.
✅ Monitor growth over time to ensure steady academic progress.
✅ Support students through targeted interventions or enrichment opportunities.

MAP Growth results also help our school evaluate grade-level performance trends and ensure that students are meeting or exceeding learning expectations. With benchmark data collected throughout the year, teachers can make informed decisions that enhance student success in the classroom.
